Hospital Visitor Policy
IU Health allows up to two adult visitors (18 and older) for most patients in IU Health facilities.
Visitors must follow all COVID-19 protocols while on site—screen negative, wear a surgical mask at all times (if older than 2), practice hand hygiene and maintain social distance. Find more details below.
Hospital visitor guidelines
Visitor guidelines take into account patient and family requests for emotional support and well-being, as well as the availability of COVID-19 vaccines. Visitor guidelines may vary by facility based on the local operating environment.
- For all adult patients without COVID-19, up to two adult care partners (18 and older) may visit at the same time. Visitation hours are 8 am – 9 pm. Adult patients may not have overnight visitors.
- For all pediatric patients without COVID-19, up to two adult care partners (18 and older) may visit at the same time. Visitation hours are not restricted. Pediatric patients may have two overnight visitors if the patient’s condition and room layout warrant.
- For emergency department patients, up to two adult care partners may visit at the same time (includes 16- and 17-year-olds who provide transportation). Visitation may be reduced to one if the ability to socially distance is compromised.
- Visitors may not eat in patient rooms.
Exceptions may be made in consultation with chief medical and nursing officers for situations involving end-of-life care and when the benefits of more inclusive visitation outweigh the risk.
Hospital visitor guidelines - patients with COVID-19
Anyone visiting COVID-19 patient rooms must wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by IU Health to ensure safety during the visit.
Patients with COVID-19 who are not undergoing aerosol-generating procedures:
- Adult patients may have up to two adult visitors (18 and older) at a time. No overnight visitors are allowed.
- Pediatric patients may have up to two visitors. Visitors are encouraged to not stay overnight, but if permitted, must follow all PPE guidelines or they will be asked to leave.
Patients with COVID-19 who are getting aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs):
- May have up to two adult visitors at a time (18 or older, unless the visitor is the parent of a patient);
- Visitors may not enter the room during the procedure; they must wait until the appropriate post-AGP exposure period has passed;
- Hospital staff will assist with appropriate PPE for visitors of patients on continuous AGPs;
- Overnight visitors are not permitted for COVID-19 patients who are in airborne isolation due to AGPs;
- Exceptions may be approved by CNO/CMO dyads in consultation with Infection Prevention.
All visitors to COVID-19 patient rooms must check in at the nurses station before entering the patient’s room. A hospital team member will help the visitor put on all required PPE. Before leaving the patient’s room, visitors should call a nurse or hospital team member to assist with removing PPE safely.

We are taking careful steps to protect you and our team. If we do not contact you to reschedule, please plan to arrive for your appointment at your scheduled time.
- Patients may bring up to two adult companions/parents/guardians to an appointment (exceptions allowed when siblings accompany the parent and patient).
- All visitors must screen negative for COVID-19 and follow all COVID-19 protocols while on site, including wearing a mask at all times if older than 2, practicing hand hygiene and maintaining social distance.
- If the companion is a parent or guardian of a minor child and does not pass the screening, another companion can be screened, or the appointment will be rescheduled.

Patients are welcome to use personal devices. Patients who do not have access to personal devices can use in-room telephones or ask their care providers about the availability of IU Health loaner iPads. Learn more about resources available to you so you can stay connected to your loved ones.
